Grandad's Eggnog

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 egg yolks
  • 2 Tablespoons of granulated sugar
  • 1 cup of milk (whole works best)
  • 1/2 cup of freshly brewed coffee

DIRECTIONS

Place the two egg yolks and sugar in an oversized coffee mug and whip vigorously with a fork. As a child, it seemed like Grandad would whip the sugar and eggs for an hour (in actuality, it was probably more like 5-7 minutes).

Heat the milk in a saucepan on the stove. Add the freshly brewed coffee and scald the mixture (heat until just below boiling). Next pour the milk/coffee mixture into your coffee mug with the whipped eggs, whipping while you pour. Be careful not to whip too slowly or the hot milk/coffee will cook the egg yolks rather than blend them evenly. Makes 1 Serving.

This drink was very special to all of the kids in the family. Unfortunately, Grandad would only make his "eggnog" (as he called it) when anyone had a cold. Of course, that would not stop us from begging for it each and every cold winter’s morning.

I enjoy making this drink for my children as something special during the holidays. Needless to say, it is always a big hit!
